Traduzione della poesia di Kutsugen “Quando l’acqua dalle onde azzurrine è limpida, ci si prepari pulendo il cordino per fissare la corona. Quando l’acqua dalle onde azzurrine è torbida, ci si lavi i piedi dal fango.”
Il significato è che in tempi favorevoli, di pace e benessere, ci si prepari per essere attivi nella società. In tempi bui, di guerre e persecuzioni (di cui lo stesso Kutsugen è stato vittima), ci si ritiri dal mondo e si viva isolati (lavarsi i piedi significa ritirarsi dagli affari del mondo).

Translation of Kutsugen’s poem “When the water from the pale blue waves is clear, we prepare ourselves by washing the cord to secure the crown. When the water from the pale blue waves is cloudy, we wash our feet of mud.”
It means that, in favourable times of peace and prosperity, we prepare ourselves to play an active role in society. In dark times of war and persecution (of which Kutsugen himself was a victim), we withdraw from the world and isolate ourselves (washing our feet means withdrawing from world affairs).
