Whether from a stream or waterfall, lake, river or sea, water brings refreshment in sultry, humid summers. In the mountains, cool, pure water flows through the cracks of large rocks, breaking into splashes, foam and glimmers of light. For Chinese painters, the shanshui landscape is “song of the throbbing pines, song of the flowing water, white cloud flying over the top without dispersing, high peak reaching the sky without stopping” and this is how they paint it. Water is a living thing, while stone seems to be a stable entity, yet it is a moving presence, as fluid as water. The Ancients gave the mountain the name “root of the clouds” and said that they, looking troubled or joyful, fantastic or serene, seem to change physiognomy at every moment: the spirit of the rock is all movement and fluidity and, to a mind free of obstructive thoughts, will open itself to an unlimited number of interpretations.

Che sia di ruscello o di cascata, di lago, di fiume o di mare, l’acqua porta refrigerio nelle afose, umide estati. In montagna, l’acqua fresca e pura scorre tra le fessure delle grandi rocce, si rompe in spruzzi e schiuma, schizzi e barbagli di luce. Per i pittori cinesi, il paesaggio shanshui è “canto dei pini palpitanti, canto dell’acqua che scorre, nuvola bianca che sorvola la cima senza disperdersi, alto picco che raggiunge il cielo senza arrestarsi” e così lo dipingono. L’acqua è cosa viva, mentre la pietra sembra essere un’entità stabile, eppure è presenza in movimento, fluida quanto l’acqua. Gli Antichi davano alla montagna il nome di “radice delle nuvole” e dicevano che esse, dall’aspetto tormentato o gioioso, fantastico o sereno, sembrano mutare fisionomia ad ogni istante: lo spirito della roccia è tutto movimento e fluidità e, a una mente libera da pensieri ostruttivi, si aprirà a un numero illimitato di interpretazioni.
